GETTING UP TO SPEED

Sorry it has taken this long for my blog to be updated. Blame it on the "workaholic" typist, or the subprime crisis, or the credit crunch, or the diving stock prices, or the 21% increase in the cost of power supply in Singapore, but just don't blame it on me. Looks like I'm set for a career in politics. *hehe*

Let's see what has happened since end August. For starters, Ipa Che Che, who has been working for my family since I was a month old has returned to Semarang, Indonesia, for good. She went home on 1 September with plans to settle down with her long-time sweetheart, a furniture maker in Central Java.

Sulastriningsih (Ning) has come to work for us in her place. Ning Che Che is from Cilacap, Indonesia. She is soft-spoken and patient, but goes about her chores really slowly. Quite the contrast to Ipa Che Che, who was loud, impatient, but completed her tasks quickly. Ning Che Che took care of my maternal great grandmother till the day she passed away in June 2008. She now looks after my baby sister, Su Ann, and me.

After our trip to Hong Kong, Su Ann started swimming lessons at Marsden Swim School at Turf City. Her swimming lessons are on Thursdays, whilst mine are on Fridays. I've not accompanied her on any of her lessons, but from what I've heard, she gets really excited during her lessons; splashing about and squealing a lot. Her coach has been submerging her in the water without any protest. She has no problems going underwater when practising at home too. As for my progress in the pool, well, I can dog paddle across the width of the pool at home now.

Su Ann has 4 teeth now. Like Daddy, she loves pork porridge. Come to think of it, like Daddy, she loves just about anything edible. She polishes off everything really quickly too, whilst I take my time to savour every grain of rice and enjoy my 2-hr lunch breaks...

Su Ann moves about on all fours like a dynamo, often with accompanying sound effects "air, air, air, air, air..." Cute to the adults, but terrifying for me when she comes tearing down towards my neatly lined toys and swipes them onto the floor or into her mouth.

I'm still attending dance classes at Forms Ballet every Monday. I've joined the Pre-School Dance class, which is great because I get to see my good friend, Beverly, more often now.

Beverly and her little brother visited us a few weeks back. We spent a good few hours playing with my Playdoh sets, making ice-cream, cooking, etc. Su Ann joined in the fun too! I wish Beverly can come over more often.

In September, my class in GUG also went on our very first field trip. We were supposed to visit Hort Park, but the bad weather meant we had to go with the contingency plan of visiting the airport. My good friend, Gwen, was my partner. We had to hold hands and follow the teachers everywhere around the airport. We saw the check-in counters, rode the inter-terminal skytrain, went to the viewing gallery, etc. It was a lot of fun touring the airport with all my classmates.

Speaking of the airport, I'll be making a trip there again in late October. Tiger Airlines had advertised S$0.01 deals to Shenzhen, China and Mommy had pounced on the chance to go. When I return from the trip, I shall tell you all about my adventure! Zai jian!

THE SINGAPORE FLYER (21 AUGUST 2008)

Just as I was easing into my jet-setting lifestyle, global fuel price hikes had to put an end to all those fantastic budget airline promos. With sky-high fuel surcharges, I had to be content with taking flights sans fuel surcharge. When the Singapore Flyer (http://www.singaporeflyer.com/) offered my parents complimentary tickets, we were quick to seize the opportunity!

The Singapore Flyer is currently the world's largest observation wheel. It started operations earlier this year. We arrived to find a very quiet complex. The staff outnumbered the visitors, just as what tourists had described to Mommy before. My family and I had the whole capsule to ourselves, which was wonderful. We had a bird's eye view of the city and heaps of space for me to roam about during the ride.
Did I have a good time? Well, yeah, especially when the ride was free! Mommy predicts that, if the Singapore Flyer don't adjust their pricing downwards, the wheel will soon turn into a white elephant. At S$29.50 per ticket, it's an exorbitant price to pay for a 30-min ride to see the skyline. Perhaps, they should consider a 2-tier pricing, one for local residents and one for foreign tourists. If local residents can pay, say, S$10.00 for the ride, it'll probably attract more people. After all, the wheel will already be rotating, so the overheads are the same, whether the wheel rotates for 1 person or more.
