PASSING OF A GRAND OLD DAME
A day after we returned from Bali, Ah Ma received a phone call telling her that her mother i.e. my maternal great grandmother ("Lau Ma") had been admitted to Alexandra Hospital. Lau Ma had not been able to swallow anything. That night, Lau Ma passed away at the ripe old age of 96 years old. She did not suffer from any disease. Old age had just caused her organs to shut down one by one.
Lau Ma left behind 2 sons, 3 daughters, 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. The wake was held at the Diamond Room of Singapore Casket from 30 June to 4 July. Hundreds of relatives and friends came to pay their last respects, and many more sent wreaths.
The cremation was on 4 July at Mandai Crematorium. Thereafter, the family hosted dinner at Singapore Island Country Club for all relatives and friends who attended the cremation ceremony to give thanks for their help during this difficult period.
Lau Ma had always played the pivotal role in keeping the family together. She would organise family dinners every month or so and made sure that everyone attend them. I do hope that this tradition will live on even after her passing.
